Let me ask you, how happy are you right now? How awesome are you on a scale of zero to 10? With 10 being awesome. Well whatever the answer is, it doesn’t matter because in today’s video I’m going to share three keys to more happiness in life. Three tips to get you more happy.
Hi I’m Kristen Myers, and I’m the founder of Next Level Coach Co, where we help professionals and entrepreneurs who look to get to that next level in life, whether that’s earning more income, finding more joy or finding more happiness. I’ve found that many people aren’t happy because they’re stuck in a pattern. They’re stuck in a pattern of either behavior, pattern of thinking, pattern of certain emotions. And they’re stuck there and it’s hard to get out because to get out, you have to change. And change is hard right? Like all humans we’re resistant to change. Often we even know what we need to do to change, yet we don’t do it. I bet you know someone who knows that they need to change but they haven’t done it yet. It might be that they’re eating the wrong foods and they know that they have to change to be healthier. Or they might know that they need to watch less TV and do more exercise. Or they might know that they need to change some behavior in order to get to where they want to be.
But change is hard. People do like to hold onto what they know, even if its painful. And as the saying goes, better the devil you know than the devil you don’t know. So yeah, it’s hard. But there are three things that if you can change them, three key pillars, three key tenants to success and happiness, that if you can apply these three principles in your life then I can guarantee that you’re going to be happier and more fulfilled. But just before I explain what the three pillars to more happiness are, I want to ask you a question.
Who’s responsibility is it for your reactions? Who is responsible for your reactions and your emotions? It’s you right? Like other people can influence you or guide you. But ultimately you get to decide what you think about things how you feel about things and what you’re going to do about things. So with that as a basis, that you’re responsible for how you feel, let’s get into the three keys to more happiness.
The first key is Focus. What you focus on is what you feel. You might have heard me talk previously about the car park situation I had at work. Where I was so focused and frustrated that I didn’t have access to the car park that was under the building. It was a bit of a status symbol of the office. And it was such a silly thing but focusing on that thing that I didn’t have and I couldn’t control would really grind my gears and set up my day for annoyance and frustration. Instead of me focusing on all the good things that I had going in my career. Which was a lot. So the thing with focus on what you feel and what you focus on is what you feel, there are three parts that I want to share with you. The first part is you need to shift your focus from the past to the present. Instead of focusing on all the things that haven’t happened or didn’t happen or didn’t go your way, focus on the present. Be fully present in the present. And also focus on the future. Focus on the exciting potential ahead, the exciting opportunities. Sure, there’s going to be some challenges and obstacles and problems in the future, that’s guaranteed, but do try and find something to be excited about in the future. If you can shift your focus from the past to the present and the future, that’s going to set up your life for another level of success and happiness.
The next part of what you focus on is what you feel, is focusing on what you can control instead of what you can’t control. Why spend energy on the things that you can’t control when you can spend your energy on the things that you can control. And then the third part to focus is, focus on what you do have instead of what you don’t have. I lost my train of thought there, but instead of focusing on all the things that you don’t have, focus on what you do have and be appreciative for it. Again, back to my car park example, I was so focused on not having the car park but I forgot about all the great things that I did have. And if you can appreciate that. The interesting thing about appreciation and gratitude, if you appreciate and think of gratitude for a particular thing in your life that you are genuinely appreciative of or grateful for, then it’s impossible to feel any other emotion. So its a good way of getting out of a negative state of emotion and into a positive one, just by focusing on what you’re grateful for and appreciative for. So that’s focus. What you focus on is what you feel!
The second key to more success and more happiness is Action. Take action on the things that you love doing, the things that you want to do. The things that are going to get you to where you need to be. So many people know it all, they know everything they’ve read all the books, they’ve watched all the videos. They’ve seen it all, they know it all but they don’t take action. Are you a know it all? Maybe you know a know it all, there’s plenty of them around. So the thing here is, you just need to take action on what’s going to make you happy. I don’t need to tell you what you need to do to make you happy, you already know it. You just have to go and do it, take action and be happy and grow into the person that you want to be, so you’ll be happy. That’s the second one, it’s really simple.
And the third key to more success and more happiness is feeling. Feeling with your heart, using your heart. Have you ever heard the expression, my heart’s not in it anymore? I mean that was me in my decision to leave my corporate career. I had a great career, a great job and I’m grateful and thankful for all of the opportunities and growth that I had there in that decade that I was there. 12 years I was there. And it was amazing, but my heart wasn’t in it anymore. And you’ve got to listen to your heart. Do you know that when you’re born, when a baby is born, conceived, growing in the womb, that it’s actually the heart that grows first, before the brain. Our brains and minds are actually supposed to serve our hearts, yet so many of us, including me, lead our lives with our mind. The bad thing about leading your life with your mind is that your mind’s programmed to keep you safe, to keep you protected. It’s not designed, or programmed, to keep you happy.
For happiness, you have to lead with your heart. Your heart knows what’s best for you and you’ve got to listen to it. So with these three key pillars and points in mind, focus on what you feel, take action and feel and lead with your heart. And on the basis we established earlier that you are responsible for how you feel and how you react. Well, I’m going to put it to you that happiness is just a choice. You can choose happiness in any moment. You can create it, you can generate it, you can feel it, you can experience it. Happiness is already inside you and I’m going to prove it to you right now.
If you’ll do me a quick favor and just close your eyes for just a moment. I want you to think of one of the most happy events or times of your life. Look over your past and find a happy time. It might be from your childhood, your teens, or something even last week. After you’ve found a happy time from your past I want you to go back to that time now. Go back to that specific happy time and see what you saw, hear what you heard, and feel what you felt. The feelings of being super, completely happy, joyful! Really feel those feelings. How much energy do you have right at this moment, in this peak state of happiness? What is possible for you right now, as you feel so happy?
You can open your eyes. See, happiness is already inside you. you just have to choose it. And if you couldn’t find any happiness at all then I’m going to put it to you that you’ve been drowning in pessimism for way too long and its poisoned your mindset.
